5.1 Opinion on Price Reasonableness Only
A Honest Fix quote audit is our opinion, based on the information you provide and general market data, on whether a contractor's quoted price appears to fall within, above, or outside a fair-market range. For assessments using pricing policy hf-pricing-v2, Honest means below our supported benchmark for the specified work; Fair means from that benchmark through 10% above it, inclusive; Overpriced means above that ceiling; and Can't tell means we lack sufficient comparable scope or pricing evidence. The 10% allowance is a product tolerance, not a statistical confidence interval. These are opinions based on stated scope and dated evidence, not proof of overcharging. Honest describes the price comparison, not the contractor's character, credentials, workmanship, or completeness of unspecified work. Earlier saved assessments retain their original Fair, Slightly High, High, or Cannot Tell results and are not recalculated under the new policy.
AI-researched estimates are conditional scenarios based on retrieved sources and stated assumptions. Their comparison allowance is 10% above the estimated amount; it is not a verified fair-market range. Missing materials, taxes, service charges, or scope can change the applicable cost. When no supported benchmark rates the whole quote, a researched scenario with a comparable quote total rates it, labeled as a researched estimate, and that rating qualifies for a paid review; the paid review for such a quote reveals the estimate's breakdown by labor, materials and fees and the sources read. It does not rate individual charges. Editing only the quoted price reuses the captured scenario while its research receipt remains valid. A new research assessment can differ as evidence or assumptions change; saved reports keep their original result.
5.2 What the Audit Is Not
A quote audit is not: a guarantee that you will save money; a representation that the contractor's work is correctly scoped or code-compliant; a verification of the contractor's license, insurance, bond, or workmanship; an appraisal or inspection; or legal or financial advice.
5.3 Accuracy Depends on Your Inputs
The reliability of any audit depends on the completeness and accuracy of the information you provide, including scope of work, materials specified, and other quote details. Vague or incomplete descriptions produce less reliable results. Low-confidence results are returned as "Cannot Tell."
5.4 Market Conditions Vary
Home-repair prices vary significantly by geography, season, material costs, contractor demand, and project complexity. Our data reflects general market conditions and may not represent your specific location or market at the time of the quote.
5.5 No Verification of Contractor Quality
Whether to use the audit result in negotiations is your decision. Honest Fix is not responsible for the quality of any contractor's work, cost overruns, or the outcome of any negotiation.
5.6 For Significant Projects
For significant projects, generally involving structural, electrical, or mechanical systems, or any project above $3,000, we recommend obtaining two or three competing bids from licensed contractors before deciding, regardless of the audit result. The $3,000 threshold matches Utah Code § 58-55-301's threshold above which unlicensed contracting work is restricted in Utah.
